The original instrument is housed in the Markneukirchen Musical Instrument Museum and bears inventory number 1078. Some of its components were lost during modifications made to adapt it to modern playing practices; the neck was re-jointed while retaining the original head. The replica is constructed using the dimensions of an original viola of the same body length by Andreas Hoyer, Klingenthal 1756, in order to respect the original condition of the instrument.
